When it comes to family photos, I believe kids should be kids—running, exploring, and getting a little messy in the process! This summer family session was the perfect example of that. We started at a beautiful park near a creek, where the kids climbed rocks, searched for bugs, and peeked into the water to spot fish. The adventure didn’t stop there, though—after all that exploring, we wrapped up the session at a local ice cream shop for a sweet (and slightly sticky) ending.
Some of my favorite family sessions are the ones where kids are free to explore and have fun. Instead of forcing them to sit still and smile on cue, I love embracing their energy and curiosity. This session was full of laughter and little moments that made it so special.
At the park, the kids ran ahead, climbed on the biggest rocks they could find, and crouched down to inspect tiny critters. It was the kind of carefree fun that childhood is all about. Parents often worry that their kids won’t “cooperate” for family photos, but I promise—letting them be themselves makes for the best pictures!
After all that adventuring, we headed to a nearby ice cream shop for a well-earned treat. The kids’ faces lit up as they picked out their favorite flavors—bright blues, pinks, and purples swirled together in cones that were (almost) too big for their hands.
As expected, things got delightfully messy. Drips turned into sticky fingers, and by the end, their cheeks were covered in colorful smudges of ice cream. And you know what? That’s exactly what made these photos so perfect. These are the moments families will look back on and smile—the laughter, the sweetness, and the realness of it all.
Family photos don’t have to be a stressful experience. When you allow your kids to have fun, explore, and enjoy the session, it makes for natural, joyful images that truly capture your family’s personality. Whether it’s splashing in a creek, climbing trees, or indulging in a favorite treat, these little moments are what make your family unique—and that’s what I love to photograph.
