When Rebecca and Michael first reached out to me about photographing their engagement photos, I knew their journey to their wedding day would be one to remember. Their wedding at Northern Stacks Events in Fridley, MN, was nothing short of spectacular, filled with love, laughter, and a fairy book theme that perfectly reflected their unique story.
Our journey together began a year before their wedding when Rebecca and Michael planned to have their engagement photos taken at the iconic Minnesota Ice Castles. They had driven hours to Minnesota, excited to capture the magic of the ice structures. However, in an unexpected twist, the Ice Castles closed down due to warm weather—a rare occurrence in a Minnesota winter! As soon as Rebecca texted me with the update, we quickly pivoted to Plan B: a nearby park.
That park session turned out to be an incredibly beautiful and fun experience. The unexpected change in plans led to some of the most authentic and joyful photos of Rebecca and Michael. This session set the tone for what would be an equally memorable wedding day.
Rebecca and Michael chose Northern Stacks Events in Fridley, MN, as the backdrop for their intimate Sunday wedding. Northern Stacks, part of the Forgotten Star Brewing, is a hidden gem in the Twin Cities area. With its rustic brick walls, industrial-chic vibe, and warm lighting, it’s the perfect venue for couples who want a blend of modern and vintage elements.
As a Minnesota wedding photographer, I’m always excited to shoot at unique venues like Northern Stacks. The venue’s character perfectly complemented Rebecca and Michael’s fairy book-themed wedding, with its cozy and inviting atmosphere.
The wedding day started at a beautiful Airbnb on the lake, where Rebecca and her wedding party were getting ready. The morning was filled with laughter, matching pajamas, and the sweet, nervous excitement that always accompanies such a special day. Rebecca’s thoughtfulness shone through when she handed me a collection of beautiful rocks from her late grandmother to include in the detail photos. It was a touching gesture that added a personal and emotional layer to the day.
Rebecca looked stunning in her wedding dress, which featured intricate lace detailing and a beautiful train. What made her look even more unique was the pearl wedding cape she wore, with pearls also delicately placed in her hair. Michael complemented her perfectly in his maroon suit and floral tie—a combination that was both bold and elegant.
Their first look outside the Airbnb was a moment of pure love and joy. The way they looked at each other was enough to make anyone’s heart swell. It was clear that they were ready to spend the rest of their lives together.
After the first look, we headed to Northern Stacks for wedding party photos. The venue’s rustic charm provided the perfect backdrop for the group shots.
As we moved indoors, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the details Rebecca and Michael had chosen for their wedding. They had gone all out with the fairy book theme, incorporating book pages into the centerpieces and other decorations. The creative use of these elements added a whimsical touch to the venue’s already stunning interior.
Before the ceremony began, there was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air. The guests were seated, the venue was beautifully decorated, and Rebecca and Michael were ready to say “I do.” As a Minnesota wedding photographer, these moments before the ceremony are some of my favorites. There’s a quiet, almost sacred energy that fills the space, and it’s a privilege to capture it.
The ceremony was a beautiful blend of emotions, from tears of joy to laughter. Rebecca shared a tender hug with her dad at the end of the aisle, a moment that was as heartwarming as it was bittersweet.
Rebecca and Michael’s vows were deeply personal and heartfelt. They spoke of their journey together, the love they shared, and their dreams for the future. The groomsmen added a light-hearted touch to the ceremony with a fun surprise: just before the first kiss, they playfully adjusted Michael’s clothing, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone present.
After the ceremony, the celebration continued with a laid-back cocktail hour. Rebecca and Michael opted for a grazing table filled with delicious bites, drinks, and yard games that kept guests entertained. The relaxed atmosphere allowed everyone to mingle and enjoy the beautiful afternoon.
One of my favorite moments of the day was when Rebecca and Michael decided to sneak off for a few moments of privacy during the cocktail hour. They found a quiet spot to enjoy a beer together and reflect on the wedding day so far. It was a small but significant moment that gave them a chance to connect and share their excitement about the journey ahead.
Rebecca and Michael’s reception was a true reflection of their personalities—fun, laid-back, and full of love. After a grand march back into the reception with their wedding party, guests were treated to a delicious pizza dinner. It was a perfect choice for the intimate gathering, bringing everyone together in a casual, family-style meal.
Instead of a traditional wedding cake, Rebecca and Michael opted for a giant donut as their “cake,” complete with a cute sign that read “Just Married.” The donut cutting was a fun twist on the classic cake-cutting tradition, and the couple’s playful personalities shone through during the moment. And of course, there was a donut wall for guests to enjoy—an absolute hit that had everyone lining up for seconds (myself included!).
The evening wrapped up with dancing, laughter, and more donuts. Rebecca and Michael’s friends and family filled the dance floor, celebrating the newlyweds with joy and enthusiasm. It was a night that none of us would soon forget.
